California is bracing for a series of powerful storms fueled by atmospheric rivers, with the first already causing significant rainfall, flooding, and strong winds across the state. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches and warnings for various counties, including Sonoma, Marin, and Santa Cruz, as well as advisories for urban and small stream flooding in the North Bay and Monterey County. Residents have been advised to prepare for potential hazards such as downed trees and power outages. The storms are expected to bring heavy coastal rains and mountain snow, with up to four feet of snow forecasted for the Sierras. The first storm, which is currently impacting the region, will be followed by a second storm with even more rainfall and stronger winds, particularly affecting southern California from Sunday to Tuesday. Governor Newsom has activated the State Operations Center to coordinate emergency response efforts, and city crews are on standby to address flooding and other issues. Sandbag distribution operations have been set up, and residents are being urged to secure sandbags before the heavy rain arrives. The atmospheric river has been upgraded to a level 3 with flooding likely, and 3 to 6 inches of rain are expected in the coastal range. GUSTY southerly winds will develop Wednesday into Thursday, with a High Wind Warning for the Santa Cruz Mountains. A storm system on Thursday will bring additional impacts. The Russian River at Hopland and Navarro River at Navarro are expecting minor flooding, with gusts reaching 60-70+ mph from Mt. Diablo to Pine Mountain Fire Rd.
