Southern California has been hit by a historic atmospheric river storm, resulting in widespread flooding, mudslides, and damage, and leading to at least three confirmed fatalities. This storm, intensified by global warming and El Niño, has dropped a historic amount of rain on the region, with parts of Los Angeles receiving more than 11 inches. In addition to the severe weather in California, wildfires in Chile have killed more than 120 people. The storm has left many areas under flash flood advisories, and powerful winds have knocked out power to 875,000 homes. The Los Angeles Fire Department has responded to 307 mudslides and 35 incidents requiring building inspections due to mud and slope failures. As the historic storm continues, there is a persistent threat of flash flooding and landslides, with more rain forecasted that could worsen the conditions of the already saturated hillsides.
