Dense fog conditions have led to two major vehicular pileups in Anchorage and on the Bay Bridge. On Thursday, a 37-vehicle pileup occurred in Anchorage, injuring 13 people and causing the road to be closed for several hours. The limited visibility, which was restricted to the length of one car, resulted in a series of rear-end collisions. Similarly, on Saturday, the Bay Bridge experienced a 43-vehicle pileup, also due to fog, which led to the same number of injuries and a 9-hour shutdown of the bridge. Witnesses, including Ruth Hayes and the Paynes, described the fog as a 'wall' with 'absolutely no vision,' recounting the sound of crashing cars in the chaos.
The Paynes were crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Saturday when they hit the fog. There was “absolutely no vision.” Then they heard crashing cars. https://t.co/yBPU9aWz8E
