Alaska is experiencing its coldest temperatures in years, with January daytime maximums being the coldest since 1997 and in some areas since the 1980s, if not for a thaw. The US max temperatures for January were recorded at -1.8C in 2010 and -2.6C in 1997. In Fairbanks, temperatures have been minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for much of the last week, marking the coldest outbreak in several years, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Dustin Saltzman. The extreme cold has led to fuel oil thickening and roofs collapsing due to heavy snow. Tanana and Fort Yukon recorded lows of -56F and -55F, respectively.
