Chiang Mai, a popular tourist destination in Thailand, has been ranked as the world's most polluted city for the second consecutive day by the air monitoring website IQAir. This annual pollution crisis is attributed to the widespread practice of crop burning by farmers. In response to the persistent air quality issues affecting several tourist spots, including Bangkok and Chiang Mai, the Thai government is considering a ban on corn imports from neighboring countries that engage in agricultural burning. This measure is intended to comply with World Trade Organization rules and is supported by local legislation, according to the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, a summer storm brought temporary relief to some provinces, including Chiang Mai and Bangkok, by easing the toxic dust problem. However, the rain also caused flooding in parts of the capital and did not significantly improve air pollution levels, as toxic dust concentrations exceeded Thailand's allowable standard of 37.5 µg/m³ in 30 provinces.
