Tesla, which has led the US electric vehicle (EV) market for six years by outselling all competitors combined, is on the verge of losing this dominant position. While Tesla remains the global leader in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, with a 9.9% margin over the next biggest seller, BYD, and selling 18% more BEVs over the last 12 months than the bottom 13 players combined, US sales of fully electric vehicles by other companies have tripled in approximately 30 months. Sales for six of the 10 biggest EV makers, including Hyundai/Kia and Ford, have risen significantly, with increases ranging from 56% to 86%. Additionally, Tesla is facing quality issues, with repair problems continuing to affect the market.
