Shanghai's Foreign Trade Rises 1% with 13.8% Export Surge; China Posts $46.2B April Surplus on $606.8B Trade

Shanghai's foreign trade expanded modestly in the first four months of 2025, with total trade value reaching 1.4 trillion yuan ($194.7 billion), marking a 1% year-on-year increase. Exports from Shanghai surged by 13.8% to 629 billion yuan ($87.5 billion) during this period, supported by a record high in April's import and export values. On a national level, China's international trade in goods and services grew by 6% year on year in April 2025, reaching 4.37 trillion yuan ($606.8 billion). This growth contributed to a trade surplus of $46.2 billion for the month. However, China reported a services trade deficit of $74.4 billion for January to April 2025, with the deficit narrowing to $15.8 billion in April alone, according to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange and the foreign exchange regulator.
