NATO’s Rutte Warns Xi May Seek Russian Strike on Alliance if Taiwan Is Invaded

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned in a 5 July interview with The New York Times that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan could trigger a coordinated escalation in Europe. According to Rutte, President Xi Jinping would likely contact President Vladimir Putin before moving on Taiwan and request that Russia attack NATO territory to divide the Alliance’s forces.

Rutte described the scenario as the “most likely” path for a simultaneous crisis and said the trans-Atlantic alliance must assume that Europe’s security is inseparable from that of the Indo-Pacific. He cited Russia’s rapid re-armament, noting that Moscow is producing “three times more ammunition in three months than all of NATO in a year,” and argued that deterrence now depends on both higher defence spending and closer industrial cooperation with U.S. partners in Asia.

The Dutch former prime minister urged NATO members to strengthen collective military capabilities and deepen ties with Indo-Pacific democracies, an agenda he said is also being advanced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Rutte contended that these steps are essential to dissuade Moscow from opening a second front and to convince Beijing that any attack on Taiwan would carry intolerable strategic costs.
