Merlin Debuts $550 Million Legoland Resort in Shanghai Amid Heatwave

Legoland Shanghai Resort opened to the public on 5 July in the city’s Jinshan District, becoming China’s first Legoland and the 11th worldwide. Spanning about 318,000 square metres and built with more than 85 million Lego bricks, the park features eight themed lands, including areas inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, and offers more than 75 rides, shows and attractions.

The resort is operated by a joint venture between U.K.-based Merlin Entertainments and the Shanghai Jinshan District government, with project spending estimated at roughly $550 million. It follows a two-week soft-opening period that began on 20 June. Adult tickets are priced from 319 to 599 yuan ($44–$84), and opening-day passes sold out despite an orange heat alert that pushed temperatures above 37 °C.

Merlin and the Lego Group see the park as a cornerstone of their expansion in China’s fast-growing family-entertainment sector. Online-travel agent Qunar reported that hotel bookings in Jinshan were more than three times higher than a year earlier, underscoring the tourism boost local officials hope the park will deliver. The launch adds to Shanghai’s expanding theme-park line-up, which already includes Disneyland and forthcoming Harry Potter and Peppa Pig attractions.
