Chinese gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw significant inflows in early April, surpassing the total inflows recorded in the first quarter of 2025, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). In the first 11 days of April, Chinese gold ETFs added 29.1 metric tons, compared to 23.5 tons in the entire first quarter. The surge in Chinese gold ETF inflows also outpaced U.S.-listed gold funds, which recorded 27.8 tons of inflows during the same period. Global gold ETFs saw $4.7 billion in inflows last week, with Asian funds recording their largest weekly inflow on record. The WGC attributes this trend to growing investor interest in gold in China, driven by geopolitical and economic uncertainties. Gold prices have risen 22% year-to-date, reaching a record high of $3,245.42 per ounce on April 14. The increase has been fueled by global economic risks, including trade tensions between the U.S. and China, which have also led to a depreciation of the Chinese yuan against the dollar. China's gold premium rose to 1% above the London benchmark, compared to 0.2% in the previous week.

ETF purchases: Gold and Silver Exchange-traded funds added 400,152 troy ounces of gold to their holdings in the last trading session, bringing this year's net purchases to 6.2 million ounces, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. This was the fourth straight day of growth.
