Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the postponement of the eviction of migrants from city-run shelters until at least March 1. This decision comes as the city faced the imminent eviction of approximately 1,900 migrants from city shelters, with an additional 961 people set to be evicted the following day. In response to the escalating costs, Governor J.B. Pritzker has allocated an additional $160 million to assist the city. An ABC7 I-Team investigation revealed that taxpayers are covering the expenses for relocating migrants who choose to leave Chicago. Furthermore, the city has decided to extend its 60-day limit on shelter stays for asylum seekers, just days before a deadline that could have resulted in the eviction of nearly 2,000 migrants. Mayor Johnson is also considering the use of $95 million in COVID funds to house migrants, a move he intends to make without a City Council vote, to cope with the influx of migrants sent by Gov. Abbott.
