A tragic incident occurred at Montrose Beach on Chicago's North Side on Monday morning. A 16-year-old boy died after he was pulled from Lake Michigan by Chicago Fire Department (CFD) divers. The boy and a 16-year-old girl were on a raft that flipped over. The girl was rescued by a witness and taken to Weiss Hospital. CPR was in progress for the boy, who was in critical condition. In a separate incident later in the day, a woman was rescued from a no-swim area at Montrose lakefront. She became unresponsive but was resuscitated by a passerby and transported to Weiss Hospital in fair condition. CFD responded to both events, with the assistance of a CFD helicopter in the morning incident, emphasizing the importance of respecting warning signs at the beach.
To clarify CFD responded to two events at Montrose today. Morning event was the fatal off Montrose beach with teenagers who fell from raft. Afternoon event was drowning response in no swim area south of beach where CPR resuscitated young woman who was swimming and took water.
