Canada has imposed sanctions on Andrey Filatov, the President of the Chess Federation of Russia, in response to his recent activities, including celebrating International Chess Day with Russian officials closely linked to Putin. These sanctions, which also follow Ukraine's lead, target individuals and entities supporting the Russian military through finance, logistics, and sanctions evasion. Filatov, undeterred by the sanctions, remarked, "It would be worse if they applauded me in parliament." The sanctions come ahead of Canada hosting the Candidates Tournament in April, which will include three Russian players. Meanwhile, there are inquiries about whether FIDE is allowing official events on Russian territory.
