The cost of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) in North America is significantly higher than initially projected. In the United States, Representative Mark Green highlighted that the Biden administration's rapid push for EV infrastructure could cost American taxpayers between $53 billion and $127 billion. Meanwhile, in Canada, the federal parliamentary budget watchdog reported that the country's EV strategy will cost $6 billion more than announced, bringing the total to $52.5 billion, which is $6.3 billion or 14% more than the $46.1 billion initially projected. The Trudeau government has also invested millions in subsidizing the installation of 34 EV charging stations across Canada's three territories, which currently service only seven electric vehicles.
