Matthew Costain, a 39-year-old man, was identified as the suspect who killed his girlfriend, Cora-Lee Smith, aged 40, and her father, Bradford Downey, aged 73, in Halifax on New Year's Eve. Costain, who was in a relationship with Smith, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the killings. Halifax Regional Police confirmed that Costain had been a fugitive wanted by Toronto police since 2019 in connection with a nightclub shooting that injured four people. The Halifax incident is being treated as a case of intimate partner violence.
