Canada remains committed to securing the removal of all Trump-era tariffs as part of a broader economic and security agreement now under negotiation with the United States, Ambassador to Washington Kirsten Hillman said at a Canada Day event in the U.S. capital. Hillman, who leads Ottawa’s negotiating team, said the goal of scrapping the levies "later this month" is unchanged.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has set a 21 July deadline for concluding the talks, which resumed after Canada agreed to abandon a planned digital-services tax that had prompted President Donald Trump to threaten additional duties and halt discussions. The tariffs Canada wants lifted include duties of about 50 % on steel and aluminum and 25 % on auto imports, measures that have weighed heavily on cross-border trade since their introduction during Trump’s previous term.
While Hillman expressed confidence a comprehensive deal can be reached, Ottawa has privately sounded out business leaders on the level of residual tariffs they could tolerate, suggesting some levies could remain if full elimination proves unattainable. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is spearheading the U.S. side of the negotiations, which cover border security, defence cooperation and commercial rules in addition to tariffs.
