Wildfires in northeastern British Columbia have prompted evacuation alerts and orders, affecting thousands of residents including the entire community of Fort Nelson and the neighboring Fort Nelson First Nation, as well as the Snake River Reserve. The fires, fueled by high temperatures, low relative humidity, and strong winds, have also led to the closure of major highways including Highway 7 and Highway 35, connecting Alberta, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith noted that most of the fires in the region are due to human activity and urged the public to report fires promptly. The situation has also caused disruptions in telecommunications and heavy smoke across the region. Rapid fire growth was reported with 3,700 acres affected in the Northwest Territories.
