The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has rejected Tesla's application to trademark the term "Robotaxi" for its autonomous vehicles, reasoning that the term is too generic and widely used to describe similar services. Tesla's attempt to trademark "Cybercab" has also been challenged, with both applications subject to further review. Tesla has three to six months to respond to the USPTO's decision.
Despite these trademark setbacks, Tesla plans to launch its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, by the end of June 2025. The initial fleet will consist of 10 to 20 modified Model Y vehicles, with purpose-built autonomous vehicles expected to follow in 2026. The service will be integrated into the Tesla app, enabling customers to hail rides and purchase vehicles, with prices starting at $37,500 after U.S. EV tax credits.
Tesla's robotaxi network will leverage its mass production capability of 2 million cars per year and a cost advantage, producing self-driving vehicles at $35,000 or less, compared to competitors' $50,000 or more. The per-mile cost for Tesla's self-driving rides is estimated at $0.10, significantly lower than the $0.50 to $1.00 per mile for human-driven rides from competitors such as Whim and Uber.
Tesla owners can add their vehicles to the network and potentially pay off their loans in as little as four weeks. The company anticipates that the launch could validate its approach to self-driving technology and have a positive effect on its stock valuation.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google, is currently the market leader in the robotaxi sector, operating over 1,500 vehicles in four U.S. cities and providing more than 250,000 passenger rides per week.
