Social Security Raises Overpayment Clawback to 50% as July Checks Roll Out

The Social Security Administration said its July 2025 payments will follow a standard timetable. Supplemental Security Income will be deposited on Tuesday, 1 July, while regular retirement, disability and survivor benefits will be sent on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays—9 July, 16 July and 23 July—according to the beneficiary’s birth date. Recipients who began collecting benefits before May 1997 will be paid on 3 July.

Separately, the agency will begin withholding a far larger share of benefits from people who were overpaid. Starting in late July, the recovery rate will rise to 50 % of a monthly check, up from 10 %. Notices explaining the change were mailed on 25 April. The SSA has not disclosed how many households are affected, but it sought to recoup overpayments from about two million beneficiaries in the fiscal year ended September 2023 and has an estimated US$23 billion in uncollected debts, part of nearly US$72 billion in improper payments identified between 2015 and 2022.

Roughly 74 million Americans receive Social Security each month, with maximum benefits reaching as much as US$5,108 for workers who delay retirement until age 70. Recipients who face financial hardship can ask the agency to lower the withholding rate or request a waiver. The SSA advises beneficiaries to monitor their notices and update the agency promptly on any changes in income, marital status or disability to avoid future overpayments.
