India inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow on 11 May, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually presiding over the ceremony. The event was also attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The facility, a joint Indo-Russian venture, is designed to produce 80 to 100 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles annually. Built at a cost of ₹300 crore, it is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, which encompasses nodes in Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot. The Uttar Pradesh government allotted 80 hectares of land for the unit, and 1,600 hectares have been allocated for the corridor's first phase. The BrahMos missile, developed by India's DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, has a range of 290-400 kilometers and a speed of up to Mach 2.8. It can be launched from land, air, and sea platforms. The missile production unit is expected to support both domestic requirements and potential exports. The inauguration also included the launch of a titanium and superalloys materials plant for aerospace and defence applications, and the foundation laying of a Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS) at the Lucknow node. Investment proposals worth over ₹28,000 crore have been received for the corridor, with IIT Kanpur and IIT BHU designated as centers of excellence to support research and development.
