Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned Republican legislation that would exempt gratuities from federal income taxes, calling the measure a "deal with the devil" during House floor debate on 2 July. The proposal, dubbed "No Tax on Tips," is promoted by former President Donald Trump as part of a broader economic package.

Ocasio-Cortez, who previously worked as a bartender, argued the bill offers limited relief because the exemption is capped at $25,000 in tips, while other provisions would raise taxes on workers earning less than $50,000. She said the package would swell the national debt, expand military spending, roll back health-care protections and chiefly benefit billionaires such as Elon Musk.

Supporters of the bill have framed it as a break for service-industry employees, but its full fiscal impact has not yet been released. The House has not scheduled a final vote.
