EU to Impose $28 Billion in Tariffs on U.S. Goods in Response to Steel Duties

The European Union will impose tariffs on $28.3 billion worth of U.S. goods starting next month, in response to the United States' 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The European Commission announced on Wednesday that the countermeasures aim to address the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs. Set to begin on April 1, 2025, the EU's tariffs will target a range of American products including steel, aluminum, textiles, agricultural goods, and home appliances. The measures will be implemented in two phases, with full enforcement expected by mid-April. The EU's decision escalates trade tensions between the two economies, following the U.S. tariffs that took effect on March 12. The European Commission described the U.S. tariffs as "unjustified" and indicated that the EU's response is "swift and proportionate."
