Delta 737 Loses Wing Flap Over Raleigh; FAA Investigates

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation after a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 lost part of its left wing’s trailing-edge flap while en route from Atlanta to Raleigh-Durham on Tuesday night, 1 July. The aircraft, operating as Flight 3247 with 109 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at Raleigh-Durham International Airport around 11 p.m. with no injuries reported.

Police in Raleigh were called the following morning when a several-feet-long metal object was found blocking a residential driveway. FAA inspectors later confirmed the debris was the missing flap section from the Delta jet. No ground injuries or property damage were reported.

Delta said the absent component was detected during a post-flight inspection and that it is “fully supporting retrieval efforts” and cooperating with regulators. The agency’s probe will examine how the component separated in flight and whether additional inspections of similar Boeing 737-900 aircraft are warranted.
