Apple Inc. has agreed to pay $95 million to settle the Lopez v. Apple Inc. class action lawsuit alleging that its Siri voice assistant recorded users' private conversations without consent. The settlement covers U.S. residents who owned or purchased Siri-enabled devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and who experienced unintended Siri activations during confidential or private conversations. Eligible users can submit claims for up to five devices, with compensation set at $20 per device and a maximum of $100 per household. Devices covered include iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, and Apple TV, provided they were used within the specified period. The claim website is available in both English and Spanish. Claimants must submit their applications by July 2, 2025, through the official Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website, providing proof of purchase or device serial numbers. Notifications about eligibility have been sent via email or mail, but users who did not receive a notice can still apply. Plaintiffs' legal team will receive approximately $30 million from the settlement fund. Users may also opt out or object to the settlement. The lawsuit was prompted by a 2019 exposé by The Guardian, which alleged that Siri recordings were shared with third-party contractors and, in some cases, advertisers. Apple has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that Siri data collection was solely intended to improve the service. As part of the settlement, Apple has agreed to confirm the permanent deletion of all Siri audio recordings collected before October 2019. The final approval hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2025.
