Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana has resigned from the Labour Party and declared plans to co-lead a new left-wing political party with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The move, announced on 3 July, ends Sultana’s 14-year membership of Labour and follows her suspension from the parliamentary party last year for defying the whip on the two-child benefit cap.

In a detailed statement, Sultana said Westminster is “broken”, citing rising poverty and inequality, and argued that voters need an alternative to what she called a failing two-party system. She said the new organisation would bring together independent MPs, campaigners and activists, and urged others to join ahead of the next general election in 2029.

Corbyn told ITV’s ‘Peston’ programme a day earlier that talks were under way among independent MPs to create an alternative platform, but he has not yet publicly confirmed the co-leadership arrangement. Some outlets reported on Thursday evening that he had not formally agreed to Sultana’s proposal; his office has so far declined to comment.

If Corbyn and four other like-minded independents join Sultana, the fledgling party would begin life with at least six MPs—more than right-wing Reform UK’s current five—potentially reshaping alliances on the opposition benches. Labour and Downing Street have not issued formal responses to Sultana’s departure.
