On World Parkinson's Day, observed globally, awareness about Parkinson's disease, its symptoms, and the unique journeys of those affected was highlighted. With over 153,000 people living with Parkinson's in the UK alone, and 90,000 new cases diagnosed every year globally, public figures, politicians, and health organizations took to social media to express solidarity and call for more support and research. The theme emphasized that there isn't one Parkinson's journey, reflecting the individual experiences of those living with the condition. Calls were made for increased NHS staffing to provide adequate care, and the importance of timely and joined-up treatment was underlined. Efforts to raise awareness included walking events and the promotion of the Parky Charter, aimed at securing more funding for research. The day also saw a push for governmental action to address the challenges faced by the Parkinson's community, including long NHS waiting lists for treatment. In the US, 60,000 Americans are diagnosed annually, with more than 24,000 Virginians living with Parkinson's.
I know personally how tough a Parkinson’s diagnosis can be and how frightening the road ahead may seem. On #WorldParkinsonsDay today, I’m leading a bipartisan resolution in Congress to designate April as “Parkinson’s Awareness Month.” https://t.co/e7uk9e6fUE
More than 24,000 Virginians are living with Parkinson's Disease. On this World Parkinson's Day, I encourage my colleagues in the U.S. Senate to pass my dear friend and colleague @RepWexton's bill to create a national plan to prevent, treat, and cure Parkinson's Disease.
Every year, 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. This World Parkinson's Day, we recognize the daily battle individuals with Parkinson's face, and recommit ourselves to working towards a cure.
