Valdo Calocane, who fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates in Nottingham, has become the center of a controversial case regarding his mental state during the attacks and subsequent treatment. A former police officer claims to have been assaulted by Calocane a year before the attacks. Despite five psychiatrists agreeing that Calocane was not fully responsible for his actions due to mental illness, there are conflicting reports with some psychiatrists claiming he was not insane at the time of the killings. Calocane was sentenced to a hospital order rather than prison, and is now in Ashworth Hospital, a facility where he has access to amenities such as Lego, a guitar, and an ensuite room. The government has ordered a special review into the NHS trust in Nottinghamshire that treated Calocane, who had been sectioned four times prior to the attacks, for paranoid schizophrenia.
