Over the past 14 years under Tory government, the UK has seen a significant increase in poverty and economic decline, with the Centre for Cities reporting that people are over £10,000 worse off on average since 2010. In Birmingham and the West Midlands, 60,000 more children are living in poverty. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation's annual UK Poverty report found that six million people are in such deep poverty that they would need to double their income to reach the poverty line. In 2021/22, 14.4 million people were in poverty, marking almost 20 years since the last sustained fall in poverty. Labour's Bridget Phillipson has called out the government's failures, particularly in childcare, and suggested the need for a general election. Save the Children UK and the JRF are advocating for systemic changes to address the crisis.
