The UK Parliament debated the Conversion Practices (Prohibition) Bill, aiming to ban LGBT conversion practices. Labour MPs criticized the Conservative Government for not supporting the bill, accusing them of a failure of leadership and betrayal to the LGBTQ community. Despite efforts to pass the bill, it ran out of debate time, prompting calls for the Government to introduce its own legislation without delay.
The Conservative Government today opposed a bill to ban #LGBT conversion therapy while Tory and Alba MPs talked it out. Seems clear it will only be with a Labour government that we will get this abhorrent and cruel practice banned for good🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ https://t.co/YkwXWOyGTP
Today in Parliament I spoke in support of a trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy 🏳️🌈 I've had surgeries with constituents and met with Ousedale School's LGBTQ+ Support Group and know how important this issue is to them 👇🏻 https://t.co/Egofj4oB7D
The Conservatives promised a ban on conversion therapy six years ago. Today they refused to back one. This is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of the LGBT people at risk of these abusive practices. Labour supports a full ban on conversion practices.https://t.co/tvSa4C443u
Courtesy of @lloyd_rm, the Government had a gift-wrapped opportunity today to act on their word to #banconversiontherapy. This bill was vitally needed to protect vulnerable people. Today they have been let down by a Tory Government which only cares about its culture wars.
I am very disappointed that the Conversion Practices (Prohibition) Bill which would ban 'conversion therapy' in the UK ran out of debate time so failed to get its 2nd Reading in the House of Commons. The Government must now bring in its own Bill without further delay.
It was a privilege to be in Parliament today to support my colleague @lloyd_rm & his Bill to #BanConversionTherapy & listen to his fantastic contribution in the chamber. Thank you to the many constituents in West Derby who were in touch with me about today’s debate. https://t.co/F9yxdsiUiP
In parliament today to support @lloyd_rm bill to #banconversiontherapy - unfortunately it’s being filibustered, with @JNHanvey speaking for over an hour against it. Tory Minister says it would have “unintended consequences”. https://t.co/jtnIVkQfVl
Disgusting & so upsetting to be sat in chamber listening to MPs filibuster & ensured that bill to #banconversiontherapy will not progress. It's a betrayal of #LGBTQ community & young people who will still face this abhorrent cruel practice. I will keep fighting for a full ban.
It worries me deeply that we have allowed attacks on trans people to become a legitimate tactic to win votes. It is never acceptable to attack a minority. If the Government gets its way to blocking this ban on #LGBT conversion practices, then Labour will ban it in Govt 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ https://t.co/kFJ96rU4hH
A Bill to ban the psychological abuse sometimes known as “conversion therapy” is currently being filibustered by a small group of mainly Conservative MPs. If they succeed in killing this Bill, @uklabour will ban this abhorrent abuse in Government.
Proud to be in Parliament today to stand up in support of a ban on Conversion Practices. https://t.co/R2TQNrzyyC
Conversion therapy is abuse. There is no other word for it. The Tories promised to outlaw this abusive practice almost six years ago and they have failed to do so. Labour is committed to banning all forms of conversion therapy outright.
MPs are debating the Conversion Practices (Prohibition) Bill at second reading today. It seeks to ban offering or advertising LGBT conversion practices. https://t.co/L4DJNlCvWY.
I've continually campaigned to #banconversiontherapy & tried to amend the Kings Speech to ensure a ban was put in place. I'm in Parliament right now supporting @lloyd_rm’s bill to ban conversion practices. We’ve had enough of broken Govt promises and must end this abuse today. https://t.co/UH2f4x5Uzg
Harmful, unethical, abhorrent - MPs must vote today to support @lloyd_rm bill to #banconversiontherapy. It's past time this Government delivered its promise. More on the bill here: https://t.co/hLSZ2FNiiS https://t.co/XFytq0uQFr
The House is now sitting. MPs will begin by debating the second reading of the Conversion Practices (Prohibition) Bill. 🔴 Watch today's proceedings live:
