During a trial, a court heard that 'high pitched' and 'urgent' cries of a baby were heard on a stormy night on the South Downs, coinciding with the time fugitive couple Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were allegedly living off-grid with their newborn daughter. Emily Pennink reported that CCTV footage was presented to jurors showing a woman, believed to be Marten, filling up a bottle with petrol. When arrested in Brighton last year on suspicion of child neglect, the couple did not disclose the location of their baby to the police. Gordon was seen demanding food upon arrest and appeared indifferent to inquiries about the missing baby, which led to questions over the death of the newborn. The arrest footage was shown to the jury, with police questioning Marten about the whereabouts of her child, to which the couple denied any wrongdoing.

Last few weeks I've occasionally been woken up in the middle of the night by the cries of a baby. When I go outside to look, the street is empty, & the other condominiums are quiet. Must be a bird.
