A new systematic review has found that one in six people who stop taking antidepressants will experience withdrawal symptoms. The study, published in The Lancet, analyzed 79 studies and revealed that around 15% of patients reported symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and irritability after discontinuing antidepressants. In 2 to 3% of cases, the symptoms were severe. This study, the largest of its kind, suggests that the risk of withdrawal symptoms is less common than previously thought. The findings highlight the importance of proper counseling for patients planning to stop their medication. However, it is noted that these symptoms can also occur when stopping a placebo, and they may be hard to distinguish from the return of depression symptoms.
