In a novel approach to combat the rise of vaping among students, a school has introduced a sniffer dog specifically to detect vaping devices. The measure aims to deter pupils, some as young as seven, from taking up smoking. The deployment of the sniffer dog comes as a response to the significant increase in vaping incidents within schools, which has increased ‘considerably’, according to a head teacher. Detection dog trainer Stuart Phillips suggested that dogs could be screening students in the morning for vapes. This initiative is part of a broader trend of utilizing dogs' remarkable olfactory abilities, as they are also being trained to sniff out invasive species by researchers from Virginia Tech and Texas Tech.
