A major incident was declared in Plymouth after a suspected World War II bomb was discovered in a garden in the Keyham area, leading to the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents. The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to the scene to assess the device, identified as a 500kg air-dropped German bomb designated SC-500. An extensive operation involving the British Army, Royal Navy, local authorities, and emergency services was launched to safely remove the bomb. The device was to be transported to the Torpoint Ferry slipway for disposal at sea by 2pm. The evacuation and transportation process required the temporary relocation of residents within a 300m radius of the bomb's location and the transportation route. This operation, one of the largest UK peacetime evacuations since World War II, prompted the use of the government alert system to advise residents. The cordon around the bomb was officially extended from 200m to 300m, impacting rail services and the Torpoint ferry. Residents were advised to plan their evacuation and follow police instructions for their safety.
