Recent analyses and surveys have highlighted a significant strain on England's National Health Service (NHS), with an alarming increase in waiting times for GP appointments and treatments. Over the past year, four-week waits for GP appointments have jumped dramatically in many parts of England. Labour has raised concerns, stating that approximately 10 million people are currently awaiting NHS treatment or operations. Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) supports this claim, indicating that one in five people in England are waiting for NHS treatment. A major poll conducted by NHS England and the ONS revealed that one in 20 people calling their GP for help are advised to call back another day, and more than one in 10 were told they would need to wait more than two weeks for care. Furthermore, the ONS survey found that the actual NHS waiting list could be two million longer than previously thought, with the number of people waiting more than a year likely close to 1.35 million. In London, one in seven patients are waiting a year or more for an NHS appointment or treatment. The issue is particularly concerning among the 16-24 age group, highlighting a dire need for improvements within the NHS, once celebrated for its highest-ever patient satisfaction and historically low waiting lists and times under Labour.
