Health leaders across the UK are raising alarms about the rising cases of measles and the urgent need for improved uptake of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. The UK Health Security Agency has declared the increasing number of measles cases a national incident, with warnings of the biggest measles outbreak in decades. In London and the West Midlands, particularly in Sandwell and deprived areas, there has been a notable increase in measles cases. Pop-up MMR vaccination clinics have been set up in response. Individuals, including a mother who lost her child to measles due to brain inflammation and a woman from Birmingham who has ongoing health issues due to the disease, are sharing their stories to encourage vaccination. Labour has suggested that children should be given jabs at home to combat the spike in cases, and there are calls for a TikTok campaign to promote vaccine uptake and combat online vaccine conspiracies. The @WHO has also designed a measles campaign to highlight the serious and sometimes fatal consequences of the disease and the importance of catch up jabs if needed.
