King Charles Sends Private Message to First American Pope Leo XIV; Duke of Edinburgh to Attend May 18 Inauguration

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have sent a private message, signed by both, to Pope Leo XIV, congratulating him on his election as the 267th pontiff and Bishop of Rome. The content of the message has not been disclosed, but Buckingham Palace confirmed it conveyed their most sincere good wishes for his pontificate. Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, is the first American to be elected pope. He was elected on May 8 at age 69, securing 89 votes from the 133 cardinals. His first public address was delivered from St. Peter's Basilica, and he led his first mass in the Sistine Chapel. Buckingham Palace announced on May 10 that the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, will represent King Charles III at the formal inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. The ceremony is scheduled for May 18 at a mass in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. Prince William will not be attending. King Charles and Queen Camilla had previously met with the late Pope Francis during their state visit to Rome in April. The British royal family continues to send representatives to major papal events.
