Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is calling for the scrapping of the two-child benefit limit, aiming to lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. Brown's plea has been supported by various figures, including the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Trades Union Congress. However, Labour leader Keir Starmer has rejected the call, citing economic concerns and the state of the economy as reasons for not committing to axing the cap.

Good on the Archbishop of Canterbury saying what needs to be said: the 2 child benefits cap is cruel & immoral, plunging hundreds of thousands of children into poverty. *One quarter* of UK children live below the poverty line. Labour refusal to reverse the policy is shocking

The Tories' cruel two-child benefit cap traps families in hardship & misery. It is hard to think of a more impactful, immediate & cost-effective way of tackling child poverty than getting rid of it. Abolishing it would lift 270,000 children out of poverty almost overnight.
Abolishing the two-child benefit limit would immediately lift 300,000 children out of poverty. That's why the likes of Gordon Brown, the Trades Union Congress, and the Church of England have called for the limit to be scrapped. That should be a priority for any government.
🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer confirms that Labour will NOT scrap the 2-child benefit cap, saying that he "can't". Scrapping the 2-child benefit cap would lift 250,000 children out of poverty. But Starmer says he can't "make promises that I can't deliver on". https://t.co/HTLJtVLqbI

Keir Starmer rejects calls from Gordon Brown to axe the two-child benefit limit. He says ending child poverty is critical but he won’t commit to scrapping the cap because of the state of the economy. “It’s tough,” he says. “But if we can’t deliver it, I’m not going to say it
Unless Labour announces its dropping the 2 child limit to lift 250,000 children out of poverty it’ll be hung round the neck of Labour spokespersons when they go on air up to the election. Arguing children have to remain in poverty to secure economic stability doesn’t cut it.
