Everton Football Club faces controversy and backlash after the Premier League imposed a second points deduction, totaling 17 points this season, for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules, sparking widespread criticism over the league's handling of financial rule violations. Political figures, including Kim Johnson MP and Metro Mayor Steve, alongside public figures like Andros Townsend and commentators, have voiced their support for Everton, criticizing the Premier League for its lack of consistency, transparency, and leadership, especially noting a similar level of breach as Forest. The deduction has not only affected Everton but has also thrown the league's integrity into question, with calls for a reevaluation of the punishment system, especially in light of ongoing cases like Manchester City's. With six weeks to go in the Premier League season, the situation remains tense as Everton and other penalized teams appeal their punishments amidst a season fraught with uncertainty.
Everton fans have hit out at the Premier League over what they see as “inconsistency” in the sanctions issued for breaches of the league’s financial rules https://t.co/9LlCGDtk8F
Could Everton still be hit with another deduction? Brace yourselves, Evertonians, the answer is yes… but not until next season. The dispute is about how #EFC have been accounting for some of their interest payments and whether they should be excluded from the club’s annual… https://t.co/21HUimiwSO
Everton points deduction: Cases 'makes mockery of Premier League', says Andros Townsend https://t.co/e008XLjU3u
"It's another HUGE issue for them" 😬 Dougie Critchley explains how Everton could be feeling after breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules for a second time ❌ https://t.co/0xtHnVYdZi
New points deduction @Everton underlines the farce that football now is in England How can these “punishments” be actioned while the Man City case, surely the most egregious, drags on? At least stay all punishments until all cases are decided At best, scrap the whole system
🗣️ "I think it makes a mockery of the Premier League" Luton's Andros Townsend has been critical of how the Premier League is handling Everton's point deductions and appeals ⬇️ https://t.co/hTixtEUaij
It’s a disgrace how Everton Football Club today again has been treated and Forest last week!No club should be reprimanded until Man City’s case has been finalised! It’s obvious that money talks,I’d even say it’s corrupt !!They are a brilliant team with a brilliant management but…
So we now know that the @premierleague have tried to take 17 points off @everton this season. We have ended up with double the penalty despite a similar level of breach as Forest. We should fight back against this injustice with everything we have got and keep all options open.
Once again more questions than answers where the Premier League is concerned, but glad to see EFC continuing to win the argument around fairness - and I support them in their appeal. The lack of consistency, transparency and leadership from the PL has been a disgrace throughout. https://t.co/wVg8NXyHSg
How is this fair given other clubs face no penalties for more breaches? I stand with @Everton staff, players and fans and they have my full support with any action going forward. https://t.co/zxiumavYMt
Six weeks to go in the Premier League season. Two teams with points deducted, both appealing those punishments. A team below (Luton) and above them (Brentford) who have no idea how many points they might need and no exact indication of appeal verdict dates. Horrendously messy.
