Recent polling and public statements have highlighted the growing discontent among Britons regarding the impacts of Brexit. An exclusive Ipsos poll for the Evening Standard revealed that 57% of respondents view Brexit as more of a failure than a success, and only 13% think it has been a success. Furthermore, more than half of the population, 55%, believe Brexit has harmed prospects for growth, and 46% say it has negatively affected their and their family’s standard of living. Additionally, 54% of Britons feel that Brexit has undermined Britain's global standing, with only 17% thinking it has been enhanced. Seven in ten Britons now believe that Brexit has had a negative impact on the current state of the economy. Amidst these sentiments, former Business Secretary and Brexiteer Andrea Leadsom has been quoted saying that businesses are accustomed to the costs of doing business and should adapt to new border checks and costs resulting from Brexit, which are estimated to cost businesses an extra £330m a year. She maintains that the implications of leaving the EU single market, including increased border checks, were known at the time of the referendum. This stance has been met with criticism, with some accusing Leadsom of gaslighting and denying previous claims made during the referendum campaign that UK businesses would maintain the same access to the single market post-Brexit.
