Argentina Lets Lula Visit House-Arrested Kirchner During Mercosur Summit

An Argentine federal judge on 2 July authorised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to visit former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who has been under house arrest in Buenos Aires since mid-June after the Supreme Court upheld her six-year corruption sentence and lifetime ban from public office.

Lula, in the capital for the Mercosur summit, arrived at Kirchner’s apartment in the Constitución district around 12:30 p.m. on 3 July, flanked by security and greeted by supporters. The meeting, cleared by Judge Jorge Gorini, lasted about 50 minutes.

Kirchner, 72, has long denied wrongdoing and says she is the target of politically motivated ‘lawfare’. After the visit Lula said he found his long-time ally “strong” and encouraged her to “keep fighting for justice,” describing the encounter as an act of solidarity.

The stopover underscored Lula’s alignment with the Peronist leader and contrasted with his limited contact with Argentina’s libertarian president Javier Milei, who earlier handed Lula the six-month rotating presidency of Mercosur. Diplomats in both capitals are watching for any impact on Brazilian-Argentine ties as Lula pursues trade talks and Kirchner continues to challenge her conviction.
