Thomas Huling, formerly of West Warwick, RI, received an eight-year prison sentence for operating a Ponzi scheme and tax evasion, following an investigation by the FBI and IRS-CI. Additionally, an IRS agent from Swampscott has been charged with filing false tax returns for three years. The Justice Department is also suing two Las Vegas men and their tax preparation companies for filing thousands of fraudulent returns, causing a loss of over $5 million.
