A cluster of early-era Bitcoin wallets that had been silent since April 2011 sprang to life on 4 July, moving a combined 80,009 BTC—worth about $8.69 billion at today’s price of roughly $109,000 per coin—according to on-chain data compiled by Whale Alert and Lookonchain.
The first two transfers of 10,000 BTC each were recorded within minutes of one another shortly after 03:45 a.m. UTC. Six further 10,000-BTC transactions followed over the next 12 hours, with every payment sweeping the entire balance of its respective wallet into a newly generated address. None of the destination addresses have sent coins to major exchanges, suggesting the movements were internal or preparatory rather than an immediate liquidation.
All eight wallets received their coins on 2–3 April 2011, when Bitcoin traded for less than $1. The total cost basis for the 80,009 BTC would have been under $63,000, implying a gain of more than 140,000-fold. The uniform size and timing of the transfers indicate the wallets are likely controlled by a single early miner or investor.
Large awakenings of so-called “Satoshi-era” coins are rare and can unsettle markets because of the supply that could, in theory, reach exchanges. Bitcoin prices were little changed in early Asian trading, and analysts noted no inflows to trading venues, leaving open the possibility that the holder is merely reorganising custody or arranging an over-the-counter deal.
