Recent research has revealed various strategies employed by bacteria and pathogens to manipulate the human immune system. These include Salmonella inducing IL-1b production to remodel the gut niche, commensal bacteria in the gut microbiome displaying resilience and evolving resistance mutations to antibiotics, and disease-causing microbes loading up nanoscale needles with proteins to wreak havoc on human cells. Additionally, Salmonella mutations have been found to reduce virulence and host immune responses, enabling some bacteria to evade the host immune system for years.
Many bacteria that make us sick use microscopic, syringelike structures to inject our cells with proteins that wreak havoc from the inside. New research now shows how these microbes load their nanoscale needles with proteins. https://t.co/qUWl30m2uk

🚨🚨I'm excited to share our new paper out now in @PLOSBiology! We found that Salmonella tricks us into killing its competitors, the gut microbiota, by inducing IL-1b production. This allows Salmonella to remodel the gut niche to it's advantage. A 🧵/1 https://t.co/3o1hPjhfiV
Very cool paper where the authors put the peanut allergen and antibodies that shut down allergic reactions into nano particles. Classic bait-and-switch to shut down the right cells! https://t.co/fUk7BTjzS2
