Honda Considers Shifting CR-V, HR-V Production to U.S. to Meet 90% Local Sales Amid Trump Tariffs

Honda Motor Co. is reportedly considering relocating some of its car production from Mexico and Canada to the United States in response to a 25% tariff on imported vehicles imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. The move aims to increase the proportion of vehicles sold in the U.S. that are made locally to 90%. The Nikkei newspaper reported that Honda plans to boost U.S. production by as much as 30% over the next two to three years. This would involve shifting the production of models like the CR-V from Canada and the HR-V from Mexico to the U.S. The Alliston plant in Canada, which employs 4,200 workers and produces the Civic model, and the Guanajuato plant in Mexico, which saw a 13.2% production increase to 16,707 units and a 27.1% export increase to 19,333 units in the first quarter of 2025, would be affected by these changes. However, both Honda Canada and Honda Mexico have stated that no decisions affecting their operations have been made, nor are any being considered at this time. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Canadian Industry Minister Anita Anand have also refuted the claims, asserting that Honda's Canadian production will continue at full capacity. Additionally, the production of the Acura ADX in Guanajuato remains unchanged.
