A Washington Post investigation has revealed that over the past two decades, hundreds of law enforcement officers in the United States have sexually exploited children. The investigation identified at least 1,800 state and local law enforcement officers charged with crimes involving child sexual abuse from 2005 through 2022. Many of these officers have avoided prison time, with 40 percent of convicted officers not serving jail sentences. The investigation highlights systemic failures at every level of the criminal justice system in protecting children and punishing abusers.
