India has introduced a new policy requiring government approval for the launch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, a move defended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as crucial for ensuring the safety of citizens and democracy. "AI firms need govt yes before launching products in India," says Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT. The policy exempts startups, applying "advisory only for large platforms," and specifically targets social media platforms but spares entities working within healthcare or agriculture. Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of proper training and testing of AI models before their deployment, stating that the "AI advisory is only for significant platforms."
