Apple Inc. is considering integrating artificial intelligence (AI) search capabilities into its Safari browser following a decline in browser search volumes in April, marking the first such drop. Apple executive Eddie Cue indicated that the company is exploring partnerships with AI firms such as Perplexity and Anthropic to enhance its browser's search functionality. Despite this move, Apple has no plans to develop its own general search engine.
The company currently has a revenue-sharing agreement with Google for AI features like Google Lens and maintains a year-to-year search agreement with Microsoft. Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, experienced a more than 5% drop in its stock price amid these developments, which represented about a 60-point decline on the NASDAQ index. Google pays Apple up to $20 billion annually to remain the default search engine on Safari. Market reactions suggest concerns over potential shifts in search dynamics, especially with competition from AI-driven search solutions and platforms like ChatGPT from Microsoft.
