Kenya is facing a severe shortage of life-saving vaccines, affecting at least 1.6 million infants and pregnant women. The shortage has sparked fears of outbreaks of diseases such as polio and tuberculosis. Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has acknowledged the issue and revealed that the Ministry of Health is undertaking sub-national redistribution of available vaccines. The crisis has been attributed to the government's failure to procure vaccines due to a Sh2 billion debt to global suppliers UNICEF and GAVI. This has led to a countrywide stock-out, with the Ministry of Health blaming the Treasury for the funding shortfall. The shortage has impacted public health facilities across 10 counties, causing parents to travel from one county to another in search of vaccines. The complicated dosing schedule of the vaccine, requiring four jabs within the first two years of a child's life, has also contributed to planning delays.
